Recently I was able to take a mini break from all the craziness of life to travel to New York City to meet up with some of the friends I made in Norway while studying abroad. We were able to pack a lot into 3 days so I decided that I’m going to do a two-part series of all the things were got to see and do. This first part is going to be all about food, friends and where we stay!
It had been almost a whole year since the last time we were all together. Our one friend from Germany was in the U.S. for a month for school and traveling so it was the perfect time to plan a trip for all of us to meet up. Two of us had never been to New York (myself being one of them) and two of the girls had been there before (one of them, Megan, is actually from upstate New York).
A little back story… the four of us met while studying abroad in Norway last year. Mathea is from Germany and she was Dede’s roommate. Dede is from Kansas and Megan, New York. The four of us did a lot of hiking together, explored Bergen, had $5 brunch at ikea each Friday, and did a weekly dinner together that usually ended in a disaster! Dede, Megan, and I did the “world tour” for our last few weeks in Europe. You can read the post I did here . We always had so much fun together so it was exciting to plan this trip.
The weeks leading up we talked a lot about what we wanted to do and more importantly where we should eat. Food is very important to all of us so it just made sense that this was one of the main focuses for the weekend. Plus is worked out that we were staying in an Airbnb in Hell’s Kitchen. This a neighborhood in New York known for great restaurants and housing many celebrities (which Dede and I had our eyes peeled to see one). We’ve always been a fan of staying in Airbnb’s so it was perfect that we could find one in a great location and a great price. It’s definitely more comfortable too. I would definitely suggest finding an apartment close to the things you want to see if you’re ever in the city.
Now let’s get to the good stuff… food!
Going to New York, you’re going to have so many options for eating that you won’t even know what to do. Since we did a little research beforehand we had places picked out for where we wanted to go but we also were open to just stumbling upon a restaurant while out and about.
For breakfast one morning we ate at a random diner that just so happened to be where the show Seinfeld was created at. We ate a burger restaurant and a Mexican restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen two separate nights that were amazing. We ate at a random Italian place one night for delicious pizza.
If you love carbs as much as we do, Little Italy is a must for lunch or dinner. We found ourselves close to Little Italy one afternoon and decided to find a place to split a few of our favorite pasta dishes from when we went to Italy. You can never go wrong with some real pesto and gnocchi!
Anyone that knows me knows that I have a deep love for milkshakes and NYC really delivered on this one. Head over to Black Tap Craft Burger & Beers to have a little taste of heaven. I think the picture says it all for this one… no milkshake will ever compare!
I’m sure you’ve seen those rainbow bagels that are all over Facebook and Instagram. One of the girls knew where it was in Brooklyn so we decided to head over to The Bagel Store for breakfast one morning. If you ever have to opportunity to go here get the rainbow bagel with funfetti cream cheese! You definitely won’t be disappointed!
The last place I want to mention is the Cookie Dō Inc. All I have to say is edible cookie dough… I mean all cookie dough is edible in my book but this place has so many options for amazing eggless cookie dough and it’s definitely a hot spot. You might have to wait in line for a while but you’ll be happy you did.
I definitely went home a few pounds heavier but it was so worth it. It was so fun to catch up with the friends I made in Norway and I hope we can continue to stay in touch despite the miles between us all.
Be on the lookout for the next post coming soon! It’s all about what we did when we weren’t eating!
